Covering Immigration Post 9-11:A webinar press briefing on therise of the i-word slur in public discourse
Presented by the Applied Research Center & Colorlines.com
In partnership with: UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. and New America Media
We invite community press and journalists of color to join us for this insightful conversation about the "i-word." The term "illegals" has swirled in immigration rhetoric for decades. But in recent years, it's use in the media has risen as it's been adopted into the Associated Press Stylebook and pushed out to move an anti-immigrant political agenda.
Immigrant communities understand the term to be racially charged, legally inaccurate and completely dehumanizing.
We'll have a conversation with investigative journalist Gabriel Thompson about his Colorlines.com story on the widening use of the slur "illegals" and related terms in the media after 9-11. (Thompson's story will be published as part of Colorlines.com's coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11.)
We'll be joined by guests that will address the i-word from the journalistic, legal and undocumented immigrant points of view. Q&A will follow.
TECH NOTE: Audio for this webinar briefing can be heard through your computer speakers or via phone conference. The webinar login and phone conference number will be included in the confirmation and reminder emails.
